Aligote – Stepping Into the Spotlight

Aligoté bottles

Aligoté, long Burgundy’s lesser-known white grape, is gaining renewed attention. Traditionally overshadowed by Chardonnay, its high acidity was once seen as a drawback. However, in this era of climate change and unpredictable seasons, Aligoté’s bright, crisp characteristics could be its greatest asset.

Inspiring examples are now being made throughout Burgundy – our producers have grapes planted in Meursault, Marsannay, and Savigny-les-Beaune, to name a few. These innovative winemakers are elevating Aligoté’s status with careful vinification techniques.

Given Burgundy’s ever-rising prices, Aligoté has emerged as a value-driven alternative. We’re proud to offer these bottlings that might just be the future of Burgundy’s white wines.

Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne Aligoté
Made from vines planted in 1923 in Marsannay, this wine is fermented and aged in old demi-muids with no battonage. This is a very concentrated Aligoté, saline, serious and a contender for the best made in the appellation.

Domaine Buisson-Charles Bourgogne Aligoté Hors Classe
This parcel of Aligoté is called “sous le chemin” which translates to “below the road,” meaning that the vines are at the limit of the Meursault appellation. First produced in 2019 from vines that are all around 50 years old, this harvest of small, concentrated berries is barrel fermented and aged 17 month in barriques (20% new). This  truly tastes like Meursault in the glass. Only 1500 bottles produced.

Domaine du Chancelier Bourgogne Aligoté Les Terres Blanches VV
From 80-year-old vines planted in a small, limestone-heavy plot within the Savigny-les-Beaune lieux-dit Les Chevrieres. Vinified without SO2 in barriques and demi-muids on the lees for 12 months, with 10% new oak. A very intellectual, luxurious glass of Aligoté.

Domaine Cruchandeau Bouzeron Aligoté Cuvée Massale
This is the first wine Julien ever made, from a selection massale of Aligoté that was given to him by Aubert De Villaine. This one-hectare vineyard was mostly planted in 2001 with some older vines, around 60 years old. Whole bunch press, fermented and maceration for 20 days in stainless steel, then aged 80% in vats to retain the freshness and mineral qualities and 20% in new barrels for added texture and body. Richer notes of fresh peach and saffron, beautiful texture, great length and perfect balance.

Domaine Cruchandeau Bourgogne Aligoté Champ de Chêne
From a single vineyard located in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, between the villages of Chaux and Villars. The vines are 30 years old and sit on an ideal terroir of limestone and clay. Whole bunch pressed, and fermented and aged for eight months in stainless tanks on the fine lees. Vibrant, delicious Aligoté with notes of fresh apples, flower, and lemon zest.

Domaine Morey-Coffinet Bourgogne Aligoté
The vineyard is located in the village of La Rochepot in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. 40-year-old vines that have been certified organic for almost 15 years. Very stony and steep soils, facing southwest. The aging was done entirely in 228L barrels (25% new and 75% one, two and three-year-old barrels) for ten months, then two months in stainless steel vats.

Clément Lavallée Bourgogne Aligoté Pariot
This single vineyard of 0.22 hectares planted in 1980 lies outside the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux. Clément likes to treat this wine like a Chablis, and it is 60% fermented and aged in stainless steel and 40% in used barriques. A fleshier wine, with more lees contact giving structure and weight.
